High Altitude– Highlights
FLY had 15 youth and 4 adults head up to the mountains of Buena Vista for a spiritual retreat Feb 4-6th 2011. We knew it was a “God Thing” when we left church with its 40 days of purpose kick off and sat down for the excellent inspiring first presenter and he started with “What’s your purpose in life?” The weekend continued with wonderful rocking music and many more opportunities to hear and discuss what it means to have a real purpose in your life– living for Jesus.
A word of thanks and congratulations to our youth who helped spread the good word about Faith Lutheran by being great sports during the weekend’s dodge ball tournament and eventually taking home the trophy: Daniel Becker, David Becker, Andy Bunker, Michaela Good,Sarah Good, Weston Iannone, Kaity Lewis, Josh Nordstrom, Brady Overstreet, Theresa Perry, Sam Petersen, Emily Puckett, Nick Puckett, Eric Stopps, Will Stopps, A big word of thanks for the adults that made the weekend possible Tom Overstreet, Pastor Mike who served as chaperones, Jessica Bejot (Interim Youth Director) who attended all the pre-retreat planning meetings, Ellen Puckett who did yeoman’s work on the weekends “work crew.”
FLY Lock-in & Service Project
Thirty nine youth attended this fall’s lock in on Oct. 29th & 30th 2010. The youth enjoyed a night full of baking brownies, a bounce house, bible study and host of other activities. They also assembled 27 care packages for our college students and military personnel. Thanks to the dedicated adults that risked life, limb, and sleep to help make this event possible: Jessica Bejot, Ladea Dante, Dianne Iannone, Pr. Mike & Debbie Knauff, Tom & Tammy Overstreet, Dan & Julie Petersen, and Brent Puckett.
WaterWorld
August 4th, 2010 30 youth and 7 leaders along with other churches from the ELCA and PCUSA ventured to WaterWorld. With all the churches combined we had about 195 people! Because we combined with other churches we were able to get tickets for only $30 which included admission, a covered eating area, and a catered lunch. The weather was good, the food was great, and the fellowship we had with our group and other groups was amazing. The best part was right when we were to leave the rain started to pour which stranded us under our shelter until it stopped. When the rain stopped, WaterWorld issued rain checks to all that saved their tickets! Big Thanks goes to all our leaders and drivers! Thanks for investing time in our youth!
2010 Back to School BBQ
The fun of summer was slowly winding down and school was beginning… and that meant a party celebrating the summer! The annual Back to School BBQ was a blast! We had such a good time hanging out at the pool, eating hotdogs and brats, and having a Zumba dance party! It seemed that all had a good night full of laughter and fun! To our youth: As you head back to school, I pray for a wonderful year and that God will work in marvelous ways in your life! I also pray that as you walk the halls of your school you would be a shining light for Christ to all who come in contact with you! You are all amazing children of God and I pray God’s richest blessings on you as you begin school.
FLY SUMMER TRIP 2010
The week of July 18th – 23rd, 9 youth (Kaity Lewis, Sam Petersen, Erin Burns, David Becker, Daniel Becker, Weston Iannone, Brady Overstreet, Will Stopps, and Eric Stopps) and 3 Leaders (Nathan Heimer, Brian Stopps, and Mindy Heimer) ventured up the mountains to Lake City, Colorado to spend a week with Camp RedCloud. RedCloud used many different avenues to help our group to be challenged physically, mentally, and spiritually. We spent the week doing four different activities: high and low ropes course, rock climbing, hiking a 14er, and rafting. Each day also had a theme that was integrated into all we did from quiet time and evening lessons to all the activities during the day. The themes consisted of Love, Trust, Perseverance, and Faith. This week was a great opportunity for all of us to experience God’s creation as we challenged ourselves to grow in our Faith!
Bowling and Laser-tag
On July 9th, 2010 FLY and Confirmation took a trip to the Brunswick Zone to bowl and play some laser-tag. The scrumptious appetizers and unlimited pop made for an exciting and fun time of fellowship. I would like to say thanks to Lori Lewis, Tom Overstreet, Mindy Heimer, and Jessica Bejot for driving and hanging out with our youth!
Thank you to all that supported the youth! Whether you came to Chick-Fil-A, Boulevard Pizza, Chili’s or any combination of these, we hope you enjoyed the food and we greatly appreciate your support to help the youth attend the summer trip. We raised $300. We are so excited to go and can’t wait for the week to arrive! A big thanks goes to Dianne Iannone for setting up the fundraisers at each restaurant.
2010 Yard Sale
We would like to thank everyone who contributed to our yard sale with donations. Your contributions are greatly appreciated. A big thank you goes out to the adults who helped Royce Stein, Elsie Schwecke, Mindy Heimer, Tom Overstreet and the youth that served Britta Strom, Sam Petersen, Weston Iannone, David Becker, Daniel Becker, Makell Overstreet, and Brady Overstreet. Without your assistance this fundraiser would not have been the success it was, we raised $1300.00.
30 Hour Famine 2010
This year’s 30 Hour Famine was a total success! All the youth from the four different churches who participated made it through all 30 hours of fasting and had a fun time serving God. We did different service projects around town including painting, yard work, preparing food, and a whole bunch of cleaning! We raised $522 that will be given to World Vision to help relieve world hunger. The government will be given a matching grant up to ten times the amount we raised! A big thanks goes out to Carl Kopp, Royce Stein, Mindy Heimer, Jessica Bejot, and Tom Overstreet for hanging out with the students and for all your hard work!!
Faith Youth Annual Ski Trip 2010
This year’s Ski Trip was a BLAST! Or as some students would say, it was “gnar gnar!”(short for gnarly). We had fresh snow to ski on and new friends to ride with. There was even a race or two down a 2 mile run called Ute. After a hard day of shredding the fresh pow, we spent a relaxing evening in the Hot Springs! Everyone’s legs were sore the next day, but we were thankful to God for holding the huge boulders from falling onto the highway until after we made it safely through the canyon. Everyone had a great weekend as we discussed how we can bring our ‘Mountain Top Experiences’ down the mountain. I would like to say a big thank you to Brad and Leanne Becker, Brian Stopps, and Mindy Heimer for driving and spending a weekend with our youth.
The Rock & Worship Roadshow 2010
The Rock and Worship Roadshow turned out to be exactly that! We had a blast seeing bands like Mercy Me, David Crowder Band, Family Force 5, and Sidewalk Prophets, to name a few. We had a great time dancing around while worshiping our Lord. This was an incredible concert and was such a blessing that it was only $10!
