A Message From Our Council
July 23rd, 2010
As a result of the congregation’s May 23rd vote to terminate our ELCA affiliation, we have entered into a constitutionally required minimum ninety day consultation period prior to a second vote. According to our constitution, C6.05.c., “The bishop of the synod shall consult with this congregation during a period of at least 90 days.” Rocky Mountain Synod Bishop Bjornberg has requested two items for the consultation: 1) an open meeting for conversation with the congregation and 2) receive materials that have been sent to the congregation relative to this decision.
After the May 23rd vote, and in several conversations and forums leading up to the first vote, the council promised discernment activities. We have held two forums and an invitation to an LCMC information forum at Bethel Lutheran was extended to members. Following is the time line for our remaining activities during this minimum ninety day consultation period:
- Wednesday, August 11th, 7:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall - An open meeting for conversation with ELCA Rocky Mountain Synod Bishop Bjornberg. All members are invited.
- August 13th-15th – Distribute to members – via email and in mail boxes - the matrix of five “affiliations” and the characteristics that members identified as most important. The “affiliations” are:
Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA), independent Lutheran, Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC), Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS), and North American Lutheran Church (NALC).
- Sunday, August 22nd, following the second service, in the fellowship hall – informational meeting to answer questions about the matrix of affiliations and characteristics.
- Sunday, September 12th, following the second service, in the sanctuary – special congregational meeting to pre-select an affiliation for Faith Lutheran to join in the event that the second vote confirms the first vote to terminate our relationship with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). This will be a simple majority vote.
- Tentative, depending on schedules - An information meeting with leadership from the alternative church affiliation selected during the September 12th meeting.
- September 26th - following second service in the sanctuary – Second vote on ELCA synod affiliation.

John Brown was elected president-elect and will serve through December 31, 2010 and will step up to president on January 1, 2011. All other council members will remain in place through December 31, 2010. A congregational meeting will be held in October or November for the election of new officers for the 2011 calendar year.
Another resolution was presented to adopt a 6-month budget to bridge the gap created by the change to a calendar year. This budget was motioned and seconded for acceptance, and passed unanimously.
